I have a friend that has two cats that he has leash trained since they were young kittens. they walk just like dogs on their leashes now. Keep working with them on a daily basis and eventually they will get the point and become leash trained. Good luck!

you are doing a VERY good thing…..I have succesfully trained my two cats to walk on a leash…..they won’t walk like you walk a dog but basically I will take them to the park and they will wonder around as I hold the leashes and I just follow them.
what I did was I got some harnesses, I first showed them the harnesses and gave them treats while I was doing this so they associated it will a good thing……I did this for a few days
then I put the harness on them and gave them treats and left it on for about 5 mins…..I did this every day and gradually increased the time I would say this was about 2 weeks till I was having it on them for a half hour at a time, then I attached the leash and I got a string toy and I had them follow the sting toy, and teaching them come when we were to walk. I was training them in the house durring the winter so come spring they were ready to go outside with the harness and leash. I would say probably a month to 6 weeks of training in the house should give you and them the confidence to take it outside. have your outtings be no more than a half hour to start and then you can increase it depending on your cat…..

Well, don’t be. It will be fine, the same thing happened to my sister. She bought a Cat, and was afraid that it would run away, or scamper too far from home and get lost, or something like that, but she let it go free, and just made sure to watcher her allot. Everything ended out fine. Also, what would help you feel that your cat if safer, is, if you have a garage. My sister had a garage and put her cat in it when she couldn’t watch her. Everything was in there; her food, her litter box, toys, ect.
If you want to leash train a cat though, then it is prety dificult, and not all cats can be. Some are easy to train, and some are just so darn independant that they can’t bear to be trained on a leash. Haha trust me! But my sister actually tried that, and the cat wasn’t too happy about it. She was still a young kitten, and she took to it fine after she realized that when she was good, and she was staying around, that she didn’t need one. Things are going fine for her now though.
My advice is, don’t worry about it so much! Cats are scavengers, and they like to go hunt, and prove that they can. They are little curious creatures, and they relate to me in this way! So if he goes off, don’t call 911 about it, they are probably ok, and coming home as we speak.. Or you read this. Trust me!
It CAN be done, training a cat to walk on a leash, but I simply don’t think that it is all that neccesary. I could give you advice on how to train a kitten to walk on a leash, and my sister did it, but after a while, she just got bored of having to walk around with her cat every time she went out, and she realized that her cat longed to be outside more than she was willing to be. I would trust your cat, and even if you don’t think my answer is best, I advise you to at least try out, cats are lazy, and soft things, but they also will long to go be outside, and be free.. Like I said, cats are independant, and if you don’t let them assert their intependance, they might not take to it so well.
Hope it helps.

not on a regular leash but a good non-string like harness works great but you need to get the cat use to it inside the house for a little while first, especially if they have never been outside (some cats freak out the first time they go out the house). Not all cats will go for wearing any type of leash and harness though, only 5 of our 11 don’t mind and the others don’t want anything to do with it except chew and play with it lol.. the 5 that don’t mind are our calmer baby like cats so if you have a mellow type of cat perhaps he won’t mind either
Oh and to those that stated cats are not meant to be on leashes, you may be right but hmmm dogs weren’t meant to be on one either but they sure have learned to get use to it and so can a cat who’s owner wants to keep him safe!!

Yes! My cat walks on a leash quite well. We had bought a harness for her and she hated it. We had no choice but to return it, so we bought her a collar and a leash. People say it is best to have a harness for a cat because that way they won’t get choked if they try and escape and you have better control of them. For my cat, this is not the case.
What I did was put her collar on for awhile to let her get used to something being around her neck. Once she wasn’t rolling all over the floor trying to get it off, I attached the leash and started to walk her around the house. After a few tries, they get used to it.
When I walk my cat outside, she usually walks in front of me or right beside me. She tends to veer off at times and all I do is give a gentle tug on the leash to direct her the right way and she responds. The thing that is different about walking cats is, they tend to stop and want to explore a lot more than dogs do. Also, a lot of cats who haven’t been outside before aren’t used to automobile sounds, children sounds and dogs barking.
When you take your cat outside, let him walk around the yard so he can get used to the groove of walking outside with you. Bring some treats along and reward him with some when he walks with you!
If you really want it to work, it will! It just takes time and patience…different for each cat.
