I tried that. My dog rolled her head under my arms and proceeded to push her legs between mine and pull me over. Then jumped on my back. lol She -is- doing better than she was though.

This is excellent! I have 2 Chihuahuas, which were both rescue dogs, and unfortunately, I am the one guilty of teaching them to jump up and claw at me with excitement. I tried several different techniques, but they didn’t work, can’t wait to try this… I love how you explain things, thank you.

Yes we trained our dog to do just that. His hips are too old for it now though.

I work in a dog kennel and whenever i bring the dogs out through the front door for their walk, a lot of them will jump on the customers waiting in the waiting room. These aren’t my dogs so I don’t get a chance to train them in this way. Are there any quick leash tips you would suggest to keep a dog from jumping?

Don’t forget to praise them for waiting and then give them their food.

  15. HammandClov on July 17th, 2009

you need to teach her to wait. Just take the food away everytime she does that and then she soons say, “Oh! I’m not supposed to do that.” It’ll work because in order for the dog to eat, it has to learn not to jump.

i have been trying to teach my dog how to sit and whenever i bring the food above her head forcing her to sit she just tries to jump and bite my hand.

I would keep a leash on him. This way you can step on it and prevent him from jumping up on you.

i have a hard time trying this on my adult st bernard. he jumps on everyone like crazy, and he doesn’t seem to mind at all that i’m grabing his paws. he never tries to struggle. what should i do?

  19. Eothi on July 28th, 2009

My little one does, she hops up and down at someone as soon as they enter the room. Her claws sometimes snag sweaters and stuff, which hurt her, and she has a habit of tripping people when she does it, so I wanted to see if there was a way to break her of that.

I don’t get to upset as long as the paws don’t touch. One of my dogs jumps but her paws never touch you.

I have a question: What if the dog is, say, dachshund-sized, and really doesn’t jump on a person so much as just continuously hop?
