yeah it may sound gross but take one of his poops from outside and put it in the litter box. then when he comes inside set him in the litter box so he gets the scent. it’s a natural instinct for cats to bury their poo so he’ll get the hang of it in no time. i had new born kittens use the litter box all by themselves with out training. (not when they were first born but after they were old enough to walk around…but the point is i had them since they were born)

Yes, you can re-train him. Just keep him confined in a small space like a bathroom or a pet tent with his bed, food, toys and litterbox until you are confident he is using a box again.

Cats are smart. Show him the litter box by putting him in it.
That’s it your done. He will know. He will miss going out but,
I would not let him out in the city if you love him.

Before you move. Put some store bought litter in your cats litter box and add some dirt from outside where he normally goes potty. After awhile he will start going in the litter box all of the time, then you can omit the dirt from outside. I adopted a stray that had obviously been a house cat at one time. She slept in my shed and lived outside for 2 more years. Like you I had to move to an apartment. I did the above routine, it worked well and easy for me. She has now been litter box trained (again) for 3 1/2 years now. OH …. BTW….. Once you start the litter box training, don’t let your cat outside under any circumstances. This way he will get use to being confined indoors. When you move to the city and your apartment he will have no desire to run when the door is open. But, be sure he can get to a window to watch the action outside.

I have NEVER seen a cat that needed liter box training-It’s in bread in their genes. Just show him where the box is, keep it cleaned regularly and they do the rest.

I think the only way is to do it when you have bad weather and the cat can’t go out set up a litter box and this sounds gross but get some gloves and find some of his poop spots and take a piece of his poop and put in his litter box he will then most likely remember and understand what to do. Just make sure it his poop not another cats, so maybe follow one day and get a sample, he probably has a few areas my cat will go outside all summer but at night and in winter she’ll use the litter box with no problem. Good luck that’s all I can think of that makes sense.
