Trick training progression - whatcha think? Spanish Walk?

horse training trick
AmandaL asked:

I’m proud of my big fat grey mare! No she’s not pregnant, she’s just huge. She just gets better and better everyday, she even surpirses me - I was the last person to expect this horse to turn out to be this cool.
A couple weeks ago, we were struggling to try to learn the Spanish walk. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. Turns out, I was using a whip to tap her legs, instead of just telling her what I wanted. I swear she speaks English, I told her what I wanted, and she did it. This is her new favourite trick, she likes it way better than bowing, and she’s really doing well.
The pics aren’t great, and they only capture one stride, so it does look better in action in person, but none-the-less, she does that Spanish Walk now! I’m so prod of my gwwooooddd guuurrrl !!!

lol that’s awesome. how’d you teach her to do that?

edit: Oh, and as for the fat thing, my horses all go in a 54 or a 56 so don’t get too excited lol Chantilly’s trick is putting on about 2″ during the winter. And they get body clipped so she has no excuse lol

how do you teach them to bow?

i would say that’s a pretty nice spainish walk, she’s got the height and the extension so i would say in motion it does look awesome. And yeah bowing is really hard for a lot of horses and they just do it because of their heart and desire to please you, it’s really hard for a lot of them to balance if they aren’t really fit and extremely atlethic. She’ll get better with time, though it may never be something she enjoys, glad you found something that is right up your alley, she does seem to enjoy the spainsh walk. Great Job! I can tell you spend a lot of quality time working with her which should be what any of it’s about. She’s a lucky mare. :~)

It looks good- she is extending her front feet well. However, she is not moving her back legs and is camped out in some of the pictures. Though that could just be the picture.
Once you start to add forward movement, she should move her hind end under her more. If she doesn’t, or takes half strides (one good extension, one hobbing half extension) do every other stride until she gets her balance.

the next step is to get them to put their leg out and hold it out, or do a slow collected spanish walk
(my girl tends to do it in a working walk pace, though with full extension, and I have a hard time getting the exaggerated slow collected pace).

That is awesome!!!! How in the world did you dod that? I’ve been teaching my paint mare tricks off and on for a couple of years and that would be a cool one to teach her (after she foals of course!) anyway she can “smile” Nod yess or no , and bow, Before she got bred she was learning how totake her saddle blanket off. i’d put the saddle blanket on her and cue her to reach round and snatch if off with a clicker as I was getting the saddle off the hitching post, it was quite cute….we stopped b/c she started doing it EVERYTIME I went to ride instead of just when I had the clicker! lol

Good for you! Your mare really trusts & loves you for you to do this with just holding her halter. Keep up the excellent training. Have fun.
