Which breed suits me?

Rawr92 asked:

Getting my first ever dog soon just wondering what you all thought would suit me, where still deciding on a breed.

I’m the youngest and im 16, so it doesnt have to be good with small children.
I live in a big village, right next to a giant public field were lots of other people walk dogs so i would like it to be quite sociable.
Our house is quite normal sized with a biggish garden.
We dont have any other pets other thank chickens and fish but thats not a problem
I like cute dogs that look cute when there a puppy and an adult
my mum wants a dog thats not really naughty
and my dad wants a dog as a nice companion that will obey him and be nice
We don’t like tiny dogs like chihuahua and we don’t want a giant one.
I live near a dog trainer so I can train it basic obedience and tricks.
I’m fine with grooming but i’d rather get a shortish haired dog, not a mop lol.
Where a loving family who just want a life long companion.

Thanks!
wow! so many replies!!! im reading through them all, its going to be hard to pick a favourite because so far they all are!! thanks again guys

A lab sounds like a nice fit for you. Keep in mind however; that as puppies they are quite hyper.

Labradors are great friendly mellow dogs and they love people.

They love going for walks, ride s in the car, and love to get into the lake, ocean…ect.

So I think a Labrador is great for you.

Get a German Shepherd. They’re loyal, courageous, wonderful dogs that will defend your life with honor and dignity.

Edit: GSD’s do not shed badly at all.

Get a boxer! They can be rambunctious, but they are some of the sweetest dogs ever. They are very smart, and will always make you laugh.

The Boxer is happy, high-spirited, playful, curious and energetic. Highly intelligent, eager and quick to learn, but can be stubborn and sneaky. The Boxer is a good dog for competitive obedience. Constantly on the move, bonding very closely with the family. Loyal and affectionate, Boxers are known for the way they get along so well with children. A well brought-up and properly socialized Boxer will also get along with his own kind and other household pets. It has been said that the name Boxer came from the way the Boxer likes to use is front paws for just about everything. If you have ever watched a Boxer go about his business you may have noticed the way he paws at his toys, food bowl and you for that matter, in a very playful cat-like way. Boxers are known to jump up and use their front paws as if they are boxing. They are very clownish and playful and have been known to grab and carry ANYTHING around including your knickknacks if he thinks he can get away with it. The Boxer’s nature is to protect you, your family, and your home. Known visitors will be welcomed boisterously. They are always keen to work and play.

How can you deny such a cute face?

get a labrador they are very friendly

The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, Labby or Lab for short), is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. The Labrador is considered the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is by a large margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991)[1] the United Kingdom,[2] Poland, and several other countries.[3] It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in the United States, Australia, and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities.[4] They are exceptionally affable, gentle, intelligent, energetic and good natured,[3][4][5] making them both excellent companions and working dogs. Although somewhat boisterous if untrained, Labrador Retrievers respond well to praise and positive attention, and are considerably “food and fun” oriented. These dogs are as well loyal and great with little children. They may be used in shows. With training, the Lab is one of the most dependable, obedient and multi-talented breeds in the world.[4][3][6]

I had a German Shepherd and he was awesome. They make great pets. You could also consider adopting a dog from your local dog pound.

Look at a shelter. They will have a huge variety, and you will be able to spend unlimited time with each so you can find a good match.

It will be the best choice you ever made!

I think that a Rhodesian Ridgeback would be perfect. They are on the larger size though. They are bred with 4 different dogs. Greyhound, Mastiff, Great Dane, and Bloodhound. They are extremely obedient and they make wonderful pets. Also Australian Cattle dogs are quite fun to have. =]

  12. avagoatgirl on December 1st, 2008

Get a Queensland heeler! there great dogs, they look cute as pups and cute as adults. (i have one ^.^) Very loyal dogs and perfect pets. and there about medium size as adults. Hope that helps!

A lab or Retriver both very intellegent dogs, and loveable the only problem grooming wise is the shedding. If you dont like the shedding then maybe a labordoodle a lab and poodle mix, the same loveable but just dont shed but you would probably have to groom him, depending on his coat. Hope this helps.

  14. B U S Y on December 4th, 2008

English bulldog is very obedient and smart. Also they are so ugly that it makes them completely adorable. They are a big pain in the butt at first, but if they are trained properly, best dog in the world.

  15. Sarah on December 7th, 2008

A springer spaniel fits pretty much all those requirements.
They are medium sized. Need walking once a day.
They are energetic, can live in a normal sized house, very socialable, medium length hair, easily train, and a great companion.
    i hope that helped.

How about a golden retriever? They are very friendly dogs and they’re also really smart and easy to train. I also think that they get along with pretty much every kind of animal. Golden retrievers make the cutest puppies! Too bad they don’t stay that way forever!

  17. tatortottwin on December 10th, 2008

Get a Border Collie or Austrilian Shepard they are very smart dogs and are really good family dogs. They are medium sized dogs. They kind of have long hair. They are really really cute. They are very active dogs. They are really easy to train because they are so smart. They are one of the smartest breeds.

  18. G C on December 12th, 2008

well i have a yorkshire terrier and im not far off your age and it is lovely once trained, it is no harm only to people you want it to be to, no hairs come out of it and she is so cute i advise you to get you a yorkshire terrier and they are reasonable in price and one extra is that they are small so no big dog jumping up from Mr Cozzie

  19. ♥Love is a Border Collie Rescue♥ on December 12th, 2008

I’d say 90% of the things you want are in your hands when it comes to training, and treatment. You’re responsible for the following things on your list:

Social, naughty, companion and obedience. I also strongly believe that with proper raising, and attention, all dogs can be good with children, I also think that all breeds, with the right devotion, can thrive in any size home/garden.

As for the cuteness factor, that’s up to you! Everyone has different opinions of what is “cute”.

You can take dog quizzes on a multitude of websites to assist you with size, grooming, etc… Have fun!

  20. Miss G on December 13th, 2008

a BOXER. I have one and they are all those things (although without proper training they can be a bit naughty!)

  21. lilyanswers on December 15th, 2008

Any dog can be “naughty” haha, you just need to spend time with he/she… they cant be left in a cage all day, and be expected to act perfectly when you finally let it out. Dont go for something like a border collie, they tend to herd… bad news for chickens :) andd they are really energetic. Consider something like a beagle. There are so many of them as young puppies & adults that have been abandoned because people get them to hunt with and the dog just wont perform. Google “beagle rescue” and you can see lots of them in your area that are for adoption, all ages so u can save one from a life in the doggie pound anddd they are cheaper to buy than the breeders charge. You can google “saves” for any breed you are interested in, and you can also call your local ASPCA and ask if they have something u might be interested in. There are sooo many cute mixed breed dogs there, all ages and you will feel so great taking it out of those cages into a real home. I adopted a puppy from there about 14yrs ago, she was the sweetest prettiest thing ever. The most amazing dog, very good puppy, never sick never any problems. She lived over 13yrs and passed away last year. It was the best decision i ever made getting a dog. I highlyyy recommend adoption. Good luck hun!

    Hello

One thing you should look into (i think more so than breed) is the age of the dog. Puppies are ALOT of work. Patience will be needed. You mention your mom wants a dog thats not real naughty & your dad wants a dog that will obey him. There isn’t one breed in particular that will do this. If raised correctly they should be ok they ALL have their own personality.Sometimes older dogs maybe better fitting for people. They wouldnt require as much training you wouldnt have to worry about accidents. If you go to a rescue they can give you a background on the dog let you know if it is housebroken, knows commands etc… By going to a rescue or Animal Shelter you would also be doing a great thing by saving a life. There are also breed specific rescues if you do decide on one breed in particular.

Hmm… I thin you should probally get a beagle. They love long walks, are adorable when they are puppies and cute when they are older and they have short hair, but there not as much a nuisance as rodent dogs. They can be hard to train but once you do you will have a devoted life long friend who will never leave your side unless hes out hunting. Also if you don’t like beagles a fox hound or another hound would be the best option for you. They love to lay around and relax they make great family dogs, can be trained to listen really well and they live for a really long time. Plus they make great guard dogs while your away.

  24. Jessica Rabbit on December 22nd, 2008

German Shepards are short haired (so you won’t have a grooming issue), are VERY smart, are great companions (aka watch dogs) and can be very sociable (depending on if you raise it to be). They are very loyal and will be a good choice for you.

I’m trying to think of popular breeds in the UK. I own a Springer, but they are/ can be wild little buggers, as puppies.
Is a Corgi or Beagle too small for you? If so, then how about researching a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier-he’s a mop but a cute one, and they shed very very little.

  26. MJane on December 26th, 2008

    Hmmm…

Well, each breed has their ups and downs. What you ultimately have to look at is what the dogs were bred to do. Any Shepherd (German, Australian, etc) is a working dog. They NEED a job, and can become nutty when they aren’t being stimulated enough.

German Shepherds, while one of my favorite breeds, tend to be very protective of their homes and family. While that might be perfect for you, I know two people that own them and both have bitten people. And it isn’t the dogs fault…they are protecting their homes.

Also, with a Shepherd they have high prey drives. I would worry about that since you said you have chickens.

Personally, I love Labs. They are so people oriented and just want to please you. That makes them very easy to train. Their downside is that they have “extended puppyhoods” and really don’t calm down until they are two years old or older. That just means they need a lot of excercise.

But-I will maintain that the best thing to do is go to your local shelter and find a dog that suits you there. Mutts can be some of the greatest dogs, too!

Oh-and to edit. All dogs shed. German Shepherds are the worst!!! My friend that has one says that every day he has to sweep up what looks like a small animal. It is all the fur.
